If you walked into our workshop on a normal Tuesday, you’d probably catch us making something sweet and simple, like our classic sugar scrubs.
But every once in a while, it's super fun to see how far we can push our creativity.
Recently, Gabe pushed me to try something totally new.
If you know Gabe, you know he is always pushing us to see what else we can invent!
We happened to hear about people putting real silk inside soap bars, and we just had to see if it actually worked.
We love a good challenge, could we master the art of a silky smooth lather?
Could we make an Artisan Soap Bar that leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft, calm, and cozy the exact second you step out of the shower?
The Silky Smooth Lather: Melted Silk & Rich Oils
We crafted the idea, and the art for the Strawberries & Saffron Silk Bar, now we just needed to figure out the science.
We started with raw Tussah Silk.
Now, you can’t just drop a piece of silk into a big bowl of oils—it doesn't work that way!
You actually have to dissolve the silk directly into lye water.
If you watch as many true crime shows as I do, you already know that lye is pretty dangerous stuff to work with!
But it is 100% necessary for "saponification" (which is just a big, fancy word for turning raw ingredients into real soap).
Once the lye melts the silk down into its basic building blocks (amino acids), we mix it with our own special blend of rich oils like Olive Oil, Babassu, Castor, and Shea Butter.
Oh, and we never forget the Organic Vitamin E!
If you don't use these kinds of rich, skin-loving ingredients, you just end up with a totally basic, boring soap bar.
But when you mix those silk amino acids with our special oils and pink Moroccan clay, magic happens.
Once cured, it creates a soap that delivers a velvety foam that makes getting clean feel awesome.
Designed to Rinse Clean: The Problem with Lingering Scents
One question we get all the time about our soap bars is something like, "Am I going to smell like a strawberry all day long?"
Our answer is a big NO, and we do that completely on purpose!
We believe a soap has one main job: to get you clean. The secondary experience is to give you an amazing, yummy-smelling experience while you are in the shower.
To be totally real with you, if a fragrance from a cleaning product is sticking to your skin all day long, you have to stop and think about what other chemicals, bacteria, and yuckies might be sticking around with it!
We want you to step out of the shower with completely clean, fresh skin.
If you want a nice scent that lasts during the day it’s way better to add that after you dry off by putting on body lotions, rich body oils, or your favorite body spray. At bedtime, its better to fragrance your space with pillow mists or a nice candle that you are sure to extinguish before you fall asleep.
